Stilvolle Hokuhoku Street – Modern, Rustic, Elegant –

Karl Bengs found the very best KOMINKA (rural traditional houses) on this street, structures bear the deep snowfalls, using precious Keyaki materials last for hundreds of years, and keeps its strength and beauty. The techniques used to build such KOMINKA are the best in the world, he noted.

He strives to save and revive those houses in Matsudai. That leads the residents and the community to empower. “Mitsuiya” is the first revived KOMINKA for sale.

Hokuhoku Street once flourished as a post town. Kenshin Uesugi, Daimyo known as Dragon of Echigo in Sengoku period used to stay here on his way to Edo capital from Kasugayama Castle in Joetsu. Karl Bengs pictured the image of this street more than 20 years back from now. Then he moved his office from Taketokoro village to Matsudai and opened a café with his architectural design office.

Unfortunately, some of the houses closed their shops and stopped the business. We buy “akiya” houses as diamonds in a rough and turn them into dwelling guesthouse/ home shop/ home office/ home gallery/ home studio, etc.

“Mitsuiya” more than 100 year old house originally sweet and bakery shop is now ready to welcome new residents. The house has two entrance doors, for private and for customers, extra space for workshop or guestrooms, snow melting system on the roof, floor heating, firewood stove, and pair-glass windows to maximize insulation effectiveness.
